Money

The currency in Romania is RON (Romanian Leu).

Always exchange currency either at a bank or an exchange point. There are plenty of ATMs where you can withdraw cash in the local currency and most places hold a POS so you should be fine paying with your card.

Banknotes: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 lei
Coins: 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani pieces (1 leu = 100 bani)

Bucharest

Bus ticket (one trip): 3 RON
Subway ticket (two trips): 5 RON
Ticket valid for all public transport (bus/tram/ trolley/subway) for 2 hours: 5 RON
Taxi price: 1,39 RON/km

Cluj-Napoca

Bus ticket (one trip): 3 RON
Ticket valid for all bus lines for one hour: 6 RON  
Taxi price: 3,11 RON/km

*In both cities you can get a ride also by using Uber or Bolt apps.

Safety & Emergencies

Leave your passports and other valuables in a safe place. Beware of bag and mobile phone snatchers. Don’t leave your passport/ valuables in your car if you are driving. Ensure you know whom to contact in order to obtain emergency credit cards and replacement checks if they are stolen. Report the loss of valuables to the local police.
